2nd house, Venus, and meaningful work

I left a career I gave 14 years to. Here’s what my chart said.

Explore how your 2nd house and Venus can help you recognize your gifts, reflect on what matters, and find meaningful ways to use your strengths.

Still life of jewelry.

Exploring your gifts through your 2nd house and Venus

For fourteen years, I gave a company my best work. I loved what I did, and I still do. I love the puzzle of design and user experience, and the satisfaction of helping a client say exactly what they mean.

But somewhere along the way, the company changed. The quality of my work stopped mattering to the people at the top, and a few of those people were, to put it gently, not very kind. At some point I had to admit that loving the work and loving the workplace were two different things.

So I left. And then came the question nobody puts on a farewell card: Who am I without this title?

Add to that a very practical follow-up: How do I rebuild at 59?

I did what any reasonable person would do. I quit, took a sabbatical, and I pulled out my birth chart.

Being good at something doesn’t mean you owe it your whole life

This is the lesson I’m still learning. You can be excellent at something and still want to use that excellence differently. Growth sometimes means asking, “What else could my gifts build?”

Astrology gave me a structured, slightly mystical way to ask. Two placements in particular helped.

The 2nd house: what I’m good at and what makes me feel secure

The 2nd house is the part of your chart connected to money, resources, and what you value. Think of it as your personal toolbox, plus the question of what makes you feel safe.

Mine is Cancer. That’s the sign of care and emotional security, and it explains a lot. My best design work has always come from empathy: sitting between a client and the people they’re trying to reach, understanding both, and making something complicated feel easy. It turns out my talent is less “making things pretty” and more “making people feel understood.”

That’s a gift that doesn’t need a corner office.

Venus: what lights me up

Venus is about pleasure, beauty, and what we love. Mine is in Aquarius in the 9th house (I use the Porphyry house system). Aquarius is independent, curious, and a little allergic to being told how things have always been done. The 9th house is the house of learning, teaching, and the search for meaning.

Which makes it no surprise that I’m happiest when I’m exploring ideas, learning something new, and sharing it. Astrology, personal growth, workshops: my Venus has been trying to tell me this for years.

When Pluto showed up at Venus’s door

Pluto doesn’t do gentle. Recently it made a conjunction to my natal Venus, which is astrologer-speak for “everything you value is about to be rearranged.”

It was. The last few years brought the end of my job, a sabbatical, and a lot of uncomfortable questions: What does security mean now? How do I want to spend my time? What do I carry forward, and what do I leave behind?

I’d love to say I met all of this with serene wisdom. I didn’t. There was grief in it. But there was also room, and I’m learning to appreciate that.

What’s next (and what’s just for me)

My next chapter is a mix of things:

  • Design consulting, because I’m still good at it, and I’d like to choose my clients.

  • Pottery, because there’s nothing like the feel of clay, making something useful and beautiful with my hands, right now, with no committee review.

  • Jewelry, for the same reason, only smaller and shinier.

  • Astrology workshops, because my Venus in the 9th house won’t let me keep this to myself.

I’m also making room for rest. Enjoying something doesn’t obligate me to turn it into income. Part of this chapter is deciding what I offer the world and what I keep just for me.

And “manifesting,” for me, is refreshingly unmagical. It’s shaping an offer, having a conversation, trying a small project. The chart gives me questions. My experience, my circumstances, and my choices supply the answers.

Your turn

Pull up your birth chart and try these:

  • What sign is on your 2nd house? How do its themes connect to your strengths and your sense of security?

  • Where is your Venus (sign and house)? What feels familiar about it?

  • How are you already expressing your gifts at work, in your creative life, or in everyday moments?

  • Which of your gifts would you like to use differently, and what would make that feel meaningful?

Then choose one possibility. Look for evidence of it in your own life. Try one small step.
